The main image of the Earth at night (2012) was captured by NASA using the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) satellite. This is called the station's coverage circle and you can see it drawn on the map in the FarEarth Observer. Daily images are provided by services from NASA’s GIBS, part of EOSDIS. The Earth Observations Group (EOG) at NOAA/NCEI is producing daily mosaic images and monthly composites using nighttime data from the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Day/Night Band (DNB). Satellite images of Earth at night have been a curiosity for the public and a tool of fundamental research for at least 25 years. It took over nine days in April 2012 and thirteen days in October 2012, during 312 orbits at 824 kilometers (512 miles) to capture the whole Earth. In this paper, an index of the “sum of lights” as observed by night-time satellite imagery within national boundaries is compared with the emergy of the nations.
Instead it is an image that was compiled using data from a sensor aboard the NASA-NOAA Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership satellite launched in 2011. NASA researchers have used these images of nighttime lights to study weather around urban areas. The satellite takes images of the Earth below and streams it down to the station in real-time. Furthermore, we are using pictures with up to 150 times more resolution than the images used to build the Black Marble Map. This composite image, which has become a popular poster, shows a global view of Earth at night, compiled from over 400 satellite images.
It isn't really a "photo." Home » Satellite Images » Satellite Image of Earth at Night "Satellite Photo of Earth at Night" Shown below is a famous NASA image that is often called a "satellite photo of earth at night." Previously known as Flash Earth. Night-time satellite imagery enables the measurement, visualization, and mapping of energy consumption in an area. Live (near real-time) images are updated every 10 minutes via NOAA GOES and JMA Himawari-8 satellites, and every 15 minutes via EUMETSAT Meteosat satellites. VIIRS DNB sensors are on the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) satellite and on the NOAA-20 satellite. The station's antenna points toward the satellite and tracks it for as long as it can until it moves out of range.
Each station therefore receives the images of the areas around it. They have provided a broad, beautiful picture, showing how humans have shaped the planet and lit up the darkness.
The imagery in this service is compiled from Suomi NPP data. Explore recent images of property, storms, wildfires and more. With the Cities at Night project we are building a map of the earth at night entirely in real colour for the first time. A global composite image, constructed using cloud-free night images from a new NASA and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellite, shows the glow of natural and human-built phenomena across the planet in greater detail than ever before.
