Great Barrier Island residents are asking people who have recently travelled to stay away and prevent the spread of COVID-19. Summer time sees an influx of visitors, with the island offering several options for accommodation.

Over 30% of the population is involved in volunteer work, at the Golf Club, Local Marae, the Rural Fire Service, children’s soccer or adults netball, St. John’s Church, Rural Women or the Art Gallery. More than 60 per cent of Great barrier Island's 285 square kilometres is public land administered by the Department of Conservation. On the 19th August 2017, Great Barrier Island celebrated becoming the world's 3rd Dark Sky Sanctuary... At a time in humanity's history when one third of the earths population, & eighty per cent of Americans have never seen the Milky Way, Gt Barrier Island is taking it's new responsibility to protect it's amazing night skies seriously. The population of 939 (2013 Census) is close knit, ready to pitch in and help each other when help is needed. Needless to say, planning for your trip to the Aotea/Great Barrier Island is essential. Aotea Track (25km, 3 days) The Auckland region’s only island multi-day hike, the Aotea Track works its way through the heart of the Great Barrier wilderness. Great Barrier Island is located north of the Coromandel Peninsula, some 90km from downtown Auckland. In 2013 Great Barrier Island had a permanent population of around 940, primarily in coastal settlements such as Tryphena, the largest settlement in Tryphena Harbour, at the southern end.
